Yoga for Men

Many men consider yoga, Pilates and similar workouts exclusively women’s exercise. Yet yoga is an excellent way for men to get their bodies in shape and relax their minds.

What is yoga?
Contrary to common prejudice, it should be noted: Yoga is not a soft sport for women. In India, the country where yoga originated, it has been practised mostly by men for thousands of years. At their core, all types of yoga consist of a combination of conscious breathing, motion sequences, certain body poses and concentration exercises. Yoga is based on a holistic image of the human being. It strengthens the entire body: Muscles, sinews and joints become more flexible, and the exercises are great for balance, endurance and relaxation. Mental exercises and meditation elements, such as concentration and relaxation exercises, may be added according to your personal preferences. Since the exercises are modular, you may adapt them individually to your level of fitness and requirements.

Yoga for any taste
There are different types and schools of yoga. The most popular form of yoga in the Western Hemisphere is Hatha yoga, which integrates relaxation exercises, recommendations for a healthy lifestyle and tips for good nutrition. Ashtanga yoga is a rather body-focused type of yoga. It is practised faster and the exercises are more difficult – not for beginners. Raja yoga emphasises the sensual, spiritual side. Here, concentration and meditation play a large role.

For men only
To ease men into it, many yoga centres offer special classes just for men. And to eliminate all distractions, there are no women and the exercises are geared towards the particular needs and capabilities of men. Men’s connective tissue is less elastic than women’s, but they have 15 percent more muscle mass. Don’t be deceived by the fact that many of the exercises are performed slowly and quietly. Take it slow in the beginning; otherwise you might be off to a difficult start and your motivation could go out the window. Yoga challenges the whole man, and only practice makes perfect.
